Practical Management for Plant
Turnarounds
Interactive Training Seminar
Lloydminster, February 7 & 8, 2011
Tartan Canada Corporation
hosted a 2 day Plant Turnaround
Management Training Seminar in
Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada on
February 7 & 8, 2011. The 10
participants were able to interact
through case studies, work sheets and a
power point program covering such
subjects as the work list generation,
work package development; the turnaround
team roles and responsibilities; how to
properly manage the awarded contractor
from the bid stage to demobilization;
and the fundamental principles of
transition points, efficiency and work
momentum. The class reviewed the
positive impact on safety and quality of
work when a shutdown is properly
planned, organized and executed. This
quality contractor is progressive by
training its personnel in the proper
methods of working in alliance with the
owner/operator to plan, organize and
execute a scheduled plant outage to be
on time and within budget while
promoting safety and quality of work.
Comments:
- the open discussion between instructor
and participants on various aspects of
plant shutdowns - interactive, organized and very
recommended for any new workers entering
the world of Turnarounds/Shutdowns;
excellent general or entry level course - learning about how other places do
their shutdowns - it was beneficial to get together with
the contractor and to look at TA’s from
(the) contractor perspective (both
owner/operator and contractor course
participants) - case study, questions and the
instructors examples together with
material makes the whole seminar
interesting and very informative - gave me a better understanding of what
I needed to do in the future to help
make things better - confirmed we were already on the right
path in our own assessment for
improvement - understanding transition points - class size and participation level
(class size was 10 persons) - To me it was a refresher course; some
things I had forgotten, would be really
great for the new people coming up in
the trades ( gentleman had 40 years
experience)
Effective Plant Shutdown &
Turnaround Management
March 1-3, 2010 Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia
Thirteen participants from
Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Singapore,
representing both onshore and off shore
petroleum industries attended a 3 day
seminar on shutdown and turnaround
planning. Each participant received an
autographed copy the technical manual
“Practical Management for Plant
Turnarounds.” The course was vibrant and
exciting due to class participation from
enthusiastic and experienced persons.
One of the gentleman, was researching
information as a Masters Graduate, and
gave a short 5 minute discussion on
mainstream scheduling programs. His
comment on the course “it was one of the
best courses I have attended and the has
the most practical application.”
John McLay, P. Eng, a Canadian
Mechanical Engineer, President of JMC
Consulting Ltd., and author of the
manual was the seminar presenter. He
encourages the participants to discuss
real plant shutdown situations, both
positive and negative, and allows the
class time to brainstorm for practical
examples to implement at their
respective facilities. Contact Ph#

Effective Plant Shutdown &
Turnaround Planning Training Program
November 5-7, 2010
Fifteen participants from the
OMV, Kadanwari Gas Plant Facility,
Pakistan, attended the seminar. These
gentlemen are well versed in shutdown
planning and tasked the course presenter
in providing the highest level of
shutdown training to date. There were
many lively debates resulting in a high
level of plant turnaround team cohesion
at the end of the three days. An onsite
work package was reviewed and missing
points were discussed, with several
ideas and concepts to be implemented in
the future. Their Turnaround Summary
Review document was very well done,
complete and collated, which provides
the upcoming turnaround a base for
positive reinforcements. We set up three
teams of 5 persons, with each team
asking five questions at the end of the
day. Each participant received an
autographed copy the technical manual
“Practical Management for Plant
Turnarounds.”
John McLay, P. Eng, a Canadian
Mechanical Engineer, President of JMC
Consulting Ltd., and author of the
manual was the seminar presenter. This
seminar was fun. It is the first time I
heard the term “diplomatic progress
reporting”. I flew into Karachi,
Pakistan, where I was met by the Obiz
representative, Hasan Akber, Program
Manager, and taken care of until my
departure through Karachi some 5 days
later. Mr. Akber is an efficient and
competent host and I felt very
comfortable with his guidance. The
Ramada Inn, Karachi was a wonderful
place to reduce the jet lag and the camp
room at the Kadanwara Gas Plant was
better than the one I have in Ft.
McMurry, Alberta, Canada. Many thanks
Hasan for being a wonderful host. (In
the pictures Hasan is the younger.)
Obiz Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd hosted the
seminar. Hasan Akber and Asif Akber can
